The Local Seeds Coalition

It begins with the seed

We connect eaters, growers, and seed people to the seeds of their own regions. Locally adapted seed grows environmentally resilient plants, richer flavor, and a food system with room for everyone in it. We want you to build this movement with us.

Why this, why now

It is time to reclaim seed culture

A tomato bred to ship far and look pretty at a supermarket was never intended for a tomato’s rich taste. Most commercial seed is selected in very few places, for uniformity and distance, for conditions that are controlled and do not vary with regions.

Seed selected in relationship with a place grows plants suited to its soils, its weather, and its people. The work of keeping agrobiodiversity alive has been happening for millennia, we as a people have forgotten. Seed variety needs to be seen and remembered.

The Plan · Phase One

Three moves that connect the field

See the full plan →
01

Build the coalition

Connect seed growers and encourage others to take up the work. We connect keepers, stewards, growers, and enthusiasts into one coordinated voice.

02

Grow awareness and demand

A shared campaign that connects seed source to food we want to eat. Grow demand for regionally adapted seed that becomes visible and real.

03

Engage with standards

An agreement among people for what regional seed source is while cultivating the language that crosses cultures. Guide people with a map, a logo, and build connections.

The Coalition

All hands. No hierarchy.

Keepers, stewards, growers, and enthusiasts all have a place here, alongside the seed companies, libraries, and nonprofits already carrying the work, often on volunteer time and passion. We want to remember seed source in the various scales and cultural contexts we bring to Local Seeds Coalition.
